It is a known fact that the hormones in oral contraception (estrogen & progestogen) may cause water retention in some individuals, resulting in increased weight. This is normally not.

Tender breasts

During your menstrual cycle, the effects of fluctuating hormones can lead to an increase in water retention which is the main cause of breast tenderness.

The problem of tender breasts is very common in the first 12 weeks or so of being on the pill. It normally subsides very quickly after that. In some women, however, it doesn't go away and might be one reason for stopping the pill.

Drospirenone and tender breasts

Because drospirenone - the newly available progestogen - minimises an increase in fluid retention, it is unlikely that on this type of pill you will suffer from sore, swollen breasts.3

Although women on and off the pill worry a great deal about breast pains and breast tenderness it is very seldom a symptom of any serious illness.

It is of course a good idea to check your breasts regularly from puberty onwards and if you are worried, you should certainly see your doctor.
